Nestled between the mountains and ocean is Muscat, a beautiful city situated on the southernmost tip of the Arabian Peninsula. The city serves as an entry point to the vast Sultanate of Oman, making it a vibrant hotspot for people visiting the region.

While there is a lot to experience outside Muscat, like desert drives and mountain adventures, the city itself has plenty to offer as well. With its grand structures and stunning scenery, Muscat provides visitors a lovely overview of the Omani heritage, culture, and lifestyle.

There is plenty to see and do throughout this oceanfront city. To ensure you get the most out of your visit, we have compiled a list highlighting the best things to do in Muscat.

Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

One of the most popular places to visit in Muscat is the Grand Mosque. It is a stunning piece of modern Islamic architecture and was a gift to the nation from Sultan Qaboos to celebrate his 30th year of reign.

The beautiful building is impeccably designed inside and out. From the outside, five slender minarets representing the five pillars of Islam reach towards the sky. And amongst these, a large golden dome. Sunsets here are truly breathtaking as the dome is lit up, creating an ethereal glow.

Explore the Mutrah Corniche

Mutrah is a charming coastal town located on the east of Muscat city. It stretches along an attractive corniche lined with dazzling buildings and mosques. With a stunning mountain backdrop and pavements outlining the Gulf of Oman, this is a lovely spot for a daytime or evening stroll. Also lining the seafront is a variety of quality restaurants and bars.

Head into the area early to explore the Mutrah fish and vegetable markets. The former may not be for the feint of heart, but certainly is an interesting view into the fishing industry which is so integral to livelihood of Oman.

While in the area, be sure to visit the Mutrah Fort. The fort itself is not the most exciting attraction; however, if you climb to the top, you will be met by a grand panoramic view of the city. Built in 1580 by the Portuguese, the fort also provides a look into the area’s history.

Go Shopping in the Mutrah Souq

Many people come to the Mutrah Corniche just to visit the souq. The Mutrah Souq is a bustling traditional Arab market housed under a modern timber roof. The market comprises a maze of small shops selling Omani and Indian artefacts, jewellery, traditional textiles, and plenty more.

When visiting the souq, you can expect to bargain. And while cards are accepted at most shops, cash is best when trying to secure a better deal.

Watch a Show at the Royal Opera House

Since its inauguration in 2011, the Royal Opera House has hosted some of the most famous names in opera and ballet. While the building is the center of performing arts in Oman, it is also considered one of the most beautiful buildings in Muscat. In fact, this grand structure was built by the same architects as the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.

The Royal Opera House is worth visiting simply to admire its arabesque design. With a myriad of pointed arches and symmetrical towers made from gleaming white marble and stone, the structure is truly stunning to see. For a luxurious night out, be sure to catch a ballet or concert.

Be sure to visit the Muscat Royal Opera House website to see what may be on during your visit.

Walk Around the Sultan’s Palace

Occupying a seafront spot on the harbor of Old Muscat is the beautiful Al Alam Palace. It is often referred to as the Sultan’s Palace as it is one of the palaces owned by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq. This is the only one of the Sultan’s palaces that sits in public view; however, it is not open to the public.

While you cannot enter the palace, it is still worthwhile to walk around it and marvel at the structure’s interesting design. With its mushroom-shaped columns and vivid gold and blue facade, it is one of the most interesting sights in Muscat.

Visit the Oman National Museum

On the inland side of the Sultan’s Palace, an avenue of palm trees leads to a roundabout surrounded by grand royal court buildings. Nestled amongst these buildings is the Oman National Museum. While the palace is not open to the public, the museum invites you to come and discover the country’s rich history and culture.

Inside the modern structure, you will find selective displays showcasing the heritage of Oman. The giant screens and high-tech devices bring the artefacts to life, allowing for a unique and interactive experience. There is also an innovative multimedia section on maritime history.

The National Museum in Oman has specific opening days and times, so be sure to check availability before making your visit.

Go Dolphin Watching

Muscat’s coastline is truly stunning, with its mix of rocky coves and sandy beaches. The view of the seafront is especially beautiful from Oman’s clear waters. Head on a boat for a unique experience, exploring the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

If you’re visiting during the warmer months, a dolphin-watching and snorkeling tour is a great way to beat the heat. On this tour, you will have the opportunity to watch and swim with dolphins, as well as other forms of marine life. Your captain will help you identify the different dolphin species – namely the acrobatic spinner dolphin, powerful bottle-nose dolphin, and the common dolphin.

Take a Day Trip to Nizwa and the Hajar Mountains

A few hours inland from Muscat is the historic town of Nizwa. It once served as a key trade route across the region. Today, the 17th-century tower still stands tall, overlooking and guarding the city.

A guided tour of Nizwa is a great way to explore the ancient city. Learn all about Nizwa’s rich history and interesting culture while admiring its sheer beauty. Nizwa is also home to some of Oman’s most significant attractions, like the charming ancestral village of Birka Al Mawz and the Jabreen Castle.

Muscat Travel Essentials

The capital city of Oman is an incredible place, but it can be confusing for first-time travelers. To ensure you do not experience any hiccups along the way, here is a brief guide on traveling to Muscat.

Best Time to Visit Muscat

Oman’s climate is typical of the Arabian peninsula, with blistering hot summers and pleasantly mild winters. During the summer months (May to July), temperatures often exceed 104ºF (40ºC). The winter months (December to March) are pleasantly temperate by contrast, with daytime temperatures rarely climbing above 86ºF (30ºC).

The best time to visit Muscat is between November and April. During this time, temperatures are moderate, which is ideal for sightseeing as it’s easier to move around. Nights can also be pleasantly breezy and sometimes slightly chilly during this time of year.

Getting Around Muscat

While public transport is limited elsewhere in Oman, there are a number of options available in the capital city. Public transport options include taxis and minibusses. But given the large distances involved in traveling around the city, driving may be the most convenient option.

All road signs are in English, with some marking various Muscat tourist attractions. As such, I recommend renting a car to see you through your stay. Note that if you’re driving beyond Muscat, especially to off-road destinations, you will need a four-wheel drive.
